Value Hive Podcast

July 5, 2025

Before heading out to enjoy the long weekend, I chatted with Brandon Beylo from Value Hive. Have a listen wherever you happen to get your podcasts.

We talked about …

  • Minera Alamos, how the Copperstone mine restart in Arizona significantly de-risks a company held hostage by Mexican permits, and broken microcap Star Royalties accidentally transforming into a potential multi-bagger because of it.
  • The Comstock value proposition. The path and potential pitfalls on the way to $20 per share.
  • My distressed preferred share buy is revealed, and why I think it’s the fulcrum security for a valuable set of assets.
  • The art of squatting on illiquid positions.
  • Artificial Intelligence and the future of equity analysis.
  • The difference between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals as portfolio managers.

Learning from failure

I mentioned having dinner with Eddie Lampert to learn from his failures at Sears Holdings. Since Eddie isn’t breaking bread with me anytime soon, I also talked about Bill Ackman’s postmortems as valuable learning tools. Here are some of those videos and there are others related specifically to Herbalife, Gotham Capital and Target.

  • The failed investment in JCPenney.
  • Valeant Pharmaceuticals and rebuilding after total loss.
  • Keys to long term success.

"Altius validates the assets; it does not, by itself, absolve management of being poor stewards of others capital."

The Altius placement comes with a ROFR, which effectively kills the possibility of a bid for the company from another buyer.

1/ To date @massifcap has not publicly discussed our position in $TNR as it seemed headed towards an activist campaign.

We have been holders of roughly 2.5% of the firm since early last year. We found the company as a result of all the back and forth on Twitter between

16/ In plain English: TNR shareholders have been asked to fund patience, absorb option grants, watch insider selling, and trust that third-party mine builders will eventually deliver the cash-flow bridge. That can still pay off. But the last twelve months did not really change

I received $1100 for lending out my $BFRG shares last month. The borrowing cost must be astronomical. Will add to the position if it drops below .80.

Comstock Metals commissioning is advancing very well with equipment arrival, assemblies and power connectivity all in progress. The last scheduled equipment arrival was the scrubber (arrived Monday) and the Ovens (10 massive truck loads) that started arriving yesterday. $LODE
